The Phoenix Center Needs Our Help
We are almost 3 years into the COVID crisis and we find ourselves in a staffing crisis. I imagine many of you are experiencing a similar situation in your workplace. We have been able to maintain services with very little alteration or reduction in services these past few years because we have an AWESOME STAFF. They are passionate about serving families who are in crisis. Learn about fighting fentanyl in the Upstate of SC.
Demand for our services continues to increase and there is a sense of urgency that is beyond anything we have seen before. From 2019 to 2020, our county experienced increases in EMS Naloxone administrations, opioid related hospitalizations, opioid overdose deaths, alcohol related hospitalizations, binge drinking, DUI crashes, and heavy drinking. As a result, we have seen a 50% increase in outpatient assessments and a 62% increase in calls requesting withdrawal management services. Our friends, neighbors, and coworkers are struggling. They need our help.
We have maintained our commitment to remain open and serve every person who reaches out to us but this is becoming increasingly difficult. Even when fully staffed with experienced counselors, we have not been able to keep up with the demand. We are operating in crisis mode and this is not manageable long term. Our turnover rate is indicative of the impact on our staff. We have lost a significant number of staff over the past two years. Many of our direct service staff are new to the field. Certification requirements are stringent and the learning curve is steep. We are continuing to look for staff who meet the minimum requirements and have a passion for working with our families. Even when fully staffed, they will not be able to function independently for 3 years.
We remain committed to serving our families in crisis and we are reaffirming our commitment to maintaining a healthy workforce. With this in mind, we are not able to see as many clients as we would normally see on a daily basis. You will see delays in getting an initial assessment if you refer someone to us. In Outpatient Services, we will see clients on a first come, first serve basis until all appointments are booked. We know this is not ideal. Anyone who can’t be seen for an assessment is invited to attend a free group led by peer support staff. Please help us by spreading the word about the staffing crisis, alternative services that are available prior to an assessment, and job opportunities that are listed on our website.
Most importantly, we ask for your patience. Our staff is a VALUABLE RESOURCE for our community. We need them to be well because we can’t do our work without them.
